Education is not the
filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire. -- W. B. Yeats Welcome to the Ellicott School District 22 website! As a school district we cover over 229 square miles of central to eastern El Paso County. Our location affords us the best of two worlds. We sit on the high plains with an awesome view of Pikes Peak, one of the most well-known peaks within the Rocky Mountains. The rural ness of the district affords our students opportunities of an outdoors lifestyle. However, our schools are within twenty miles of Colorado Springs, the second largest city in Colorado. Our school district is configured into three attendance sites. The elementary campus is K-4, the middle school is 5-8 and our high school is 9-12. We have a strong collaboration with the Metropolitan Recreation District and the El Paso County Parks and Recreation District which allows us to develop a community park system within our campuses. This includes our playgrounds, baseball and softball complex and a new track which was finished during 2004-2005 school year. Irrigation and landscaping are scheduled for the field during the summer of 2006. With the start of the 2003-2004 school year, Ellicott School District 22 began the implementation of a four-day week. This four-day week continues again this school year. Our students begin the school day at about 8:00 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m. Strategies have been put into place to help the students be successful at all levels. The four-day week for students will also allow teacher additional opportunities for staff development on Fridays. We are excited about the learning opportunities which we have planned for the students of Ellicott School District 22. We care about our students and we want them to be successful. It is important to note that success does not come easy and without effort. We will expect our staff and students to put forth their very best for the true measure of success that comes with hard work. In order to improve student achievement, new programs for student learning have been put into place. Everyday math for elementary grades through 6th grade were started during the 2004-2005 school year. During 2005-2006 we began the Reading First program at the elementary and a Bully Prevention Initiative. We have begun to see results with all three of these programs. We measure success as gradual sustained growth. We also know that it typically takes at least three years to see positive change occurring. Progress is a process not an event. During the 2005-2006 school we developed and surveyed parents, students and staff for the purpose of improving student achievement. As a result of those surveys we developed five goals. These goals are:
These five goals will provide the focus for our work as the district moves forward toward improved student achievement. We also intend to administer the same surveys again this year to monitor progress from the previous year. If you are interested in finding out more about our district, feel free to browse around our website. Better yet stop by and see us and we will give you a tour of the district. Once again welcome and thanks for stopping by! H. Terry Ebert, Superintendent
