Mathematics
Ellicott Elementary just updated their math curriculum to Dimensions for Kindergarten through 2nd grade and Eureka Math for 3rd grade through 5th grade.
Dimensions math is a curriculum rooted in a rigorous and engaging approach. The overall approach of Dimensions is to develop student understanding of deep mathematical thinking. The curriculum uses concepts such as Concrete Pictorial Abstract Approach, number bonds, bar modeling, and mental math skills.
Eureka Math is a skills focused program that takes time to engage students in a deep understand of how math works. The concepts layer over time and create enduring knowledge of the skills with imbedded rigorous concepts. Students develop vast knowledge that is beyond a discrete set of skills.
Reading
Ellicott Elementary uses the McGraw-Hill Wonders reading curriculum in all classrooms, Kindergarten through fifth grade. Wonders emphasizes the “power of connection,” framing each six-week unit with an essential question, connected texts, and text-dependent questions. Vocabulary and English language development are integral parts of daily lessons. Students participate in a daily Enrichment and Intervention block, as well.
Writing
The Write Tools develops strong, competent writers across multiple genres. Students learn specific strategies to help them meet expectations in Informative/Explanatory, Narrative, and Opinion/Persuasive writing.
Handwriting
Handwriting without Tears is used in grades K-2nd to help students for and master quality penmanship. This curriculum allows fluidity in common phrases as students emerge into the next grade level.
Science
Ellicott Elementary teachers use the Colorado Academic Standards as the foundation for science instruction. Last year, 5th graders scored in the top 36% of all students statewide on CMAS Science exams. We offer S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) enrichment programs after school at all grade levels.
Personalized Learning
Exact Path, through Edmentum, provides students with blended learning opportunities that have been personalized to meet students’ individual needs in reading and mathematics. Moby Max is an interactive software that is also used for additional practice and extension for high achieving students. All students have frequent access to blended learning opportunities on iPads or in one of our three technology labs.
